Passport is a valuable identity document. To make sure it doesn’t go into unsafe hands, security measure like Police verification is required. Thus Police Verification is an important phase in the Passport application process. Passport is issued only if there are no objections mentioned by the Police after verification. Else Passport has to be re-verified or re-applied depending upon the reasons of rejections.
Types of Police Verification:
Generally, there are three types of Police verification i.e. Pre-reverification, Post-verification and No Police verification. Let’s look into all the types one-by-one here.
Pre-verification:
For normal Passports, applicants after completing verification process inside Passport office are notified to get pre-verification. Here only after proper verification of documents by Police, the Passport is issued and delivered. Else the process will be under hold until the applicant completes the verification.
Post verification:
This is the case observed generally for tatkal passports. Due to emergency reasons, Post verification is issued to the applicants applied under tatkal schemes. Here first Passport is issued and then verification is done by the Police.
But the Passport is authorized to use only after completing the verification and getting feedback from Police without any objections.
Post verification is issued for Government employees / PSU employees and for minor children whose parents have passports and valid proofs in the same residing address.
The only difference in the Pre and Post verification is that the Police comes to the applicant’s residential address given in the Passport to verify the presence of the applicant in that address. It can be done either before issuing the Passport or after issuing the Passport.
No verification:
Sometimes Police verification is not required for renewal of Passport when the applicant is residing in the same address for longer years whose current Passport address is same as old Passport address. Since the applicant would have already completed Police verification in that particular address when the old Passport was applied, the authorities would exempt the verification process if renewed in the same address.
Also for new born babies,as the proof documents submitted are of parents with valid passports, the police verification in this case is not much required.
However, the final decision is taken by the passport authorities based on the category of application.
How to check the status of Passport:
It’s very easy to track the status of Passport online from time-to-time. Since the whole Passport application process is done online now, the status of the applications can be seen online by logging into the portal. Commonly seen verification status are Clear, Diverse and Incomplete.
‘Clear’ status indicates that the applicant has no criminal records and all the details submitted during verification are true and correct.
‘Diverse’ status is viewed when the criminal cases have been filed against the applicant pending in a court of law or when they are discrepancies in the details submitted by the applicant are incorrect.
‘Incomplete’ status is given when the proof documents provided by the applicant are not sufficient to confirm the stay of that person in the given address for a time period mentioned in the application.
Whatever could be the reason, Passport issuance or rejection depends on the report submitted by Police during verification. If you feel that the status is improper, you can reach out to the Police station directly and ask for the reason of rejection.
Rejections in Police verification:
In case, the application gets rejected in the verification due to some reason, based on the complexity, you need to either visit RPO for another round of verification or pay fine and reapply passport for new application. Let us now discuss what are the possible reasons for rejections and what can be done to get rid of them for getting a Passport in hand.
Reasons:
Below are the common reasons where the application gets rejected after Police verification
- Unclear documents:
The documents submitted as proof of stay in the residential address are invalid and do not contain the authorization, then the application is rejected.
- Incorrect information:
If the details provided by the application seems to be not correct, the Passport application moves to RPO. You need to send request to Regional Passport Office (RPO) stating all the reasons that caused the situation and ask for re-verification.
- Incomplete Police verification:
When the applicant’s record shows that there is an incomplete Police verification in the previous application with any proper reason, then there are chances that the current file can be put on hold if the proper explanation and proofs are not submitted to Police.
- Criminal history:
If Police find out that there are criminal records against the applicant during verification. They put the process on hold. The applicant needs to clear the case first and submit the court orders to RPO along with the address proofs requesting for re-verification.
- Security reasons:
In some cases, the applicant can be a person ranking high on the wanted list by the law enforcement in the country. Those applications are highly rejected for security reasons.
How to reapply a passport if police verification failed:
When you see that your application was rejected, all that you need to check first is the reason for rejection. If it’s due to incomplete documents or incorrect information, then you can clear it quickly and reapply for passport verification after 3 days.
If the reasons are unclear, then you need to write a letter to RPO or register a grievance. Passport office takes it up and resolve the issue when your request seems to be genuine and acceptable.
To reapply with the rejected files, you need to pay some amount as fine in the Passport Office and apply a new one again.
Is Police verification done online:
As of now, Police verification is still done offline. But due to the advancement in technology, Indian Government is implementing steps to take the whole process online throughout the country in the coming years.
